OSI Strives For Continued World Wide Growth

Most people in the US have probably eaten products provided by OSI, the world’s leader in supplying the needs of the food service industry. It has grown from a meat market and butcher shop in 1909, Otto & Son in Chicago, to being McDonald’s restaurants supplier of fresh ground beef in 1955. Now it has gained the ability to develop, produce, source and distribute custom food solutions world wide. It operates in 17 different countries with 65 facilities and 20,000 employees. It partners with food service and retail brands providing concept to table solution. Companies are offered the expertise, experience and consistent distribution and global supply chain OSI acquired while expanding internationally. It now provides beef, chicken and food items such as sandwiches and pizza to leading food service and retail brands. It partners with suppliers and clients in need of product development to help their business grow. Other than McDonald’s, it’s clients include Starbucks, Papa John’s, Subway and Burger King.

In 1975, Otto & Sons became OSI Group after opening a special plant dedicated to serving the needs of MacDonald’s in 1973. Sheldon Lavin, current CEO, became partners with the owners and influenced OSI’s global expansion. In the ’80s it expanded into Germany, Spain, Brazil, Taiwan and Austria as well as opened two more plants in the US. In the ’90s the Philippines, Mexico and Poland were added to their world wide network. Continued expansion in to the poultry and beef markets included Australia, the US, Japan, India and Canada after 2000. In 2014, beef distribution expanded throughout Europe while allowing Pickstock in the UK to grow and expand. In Canada, the partnership with Select Ready Foods in Edmonton, Alberta allowed OSI Group to expand into value added meat products through its production of chicken, beef and pork products for food service companies. The German supermarket chain EDEKA gave OSI Group the opportunity to expand into the affordable high quality meat products through their partnership.

A look at OSI’s would not be complete without recognizing its acquisitions in the US during 2016. It acquired a Tyson plant in Chicago that offered the potential for added growth. In addition, in 2016, OSI acquired Baho Food who currently produce and distribute a variety of foods and convenience meet products in the Netherlands and Germany to broaden its European reach with the inclusion of deli meats and quick snacks. Flagship Europe distributes its products, including frozen poultry, sauces and Oliver James pies through out the UK and Europe, also became a part of OSI group, allowing expansion beyond frozen and convenience meats to food supplies, marinades and other products in the European market. OSI also acquired Hynek Schlachthof, a slaughterhouse near Frankfurt, Germany who work with local livestock producers. This is valuable for its commitment to sustainable supply chains and green practices. OSI has become an international food provider with the capacity to reach more tables worldwide.
